Bounce handling in Mautic is a topic that keeps coming up, and for good reason. If you’re sending emails through services like SendGrid, knowing how Mautic treats soft and hard bounces can save you a lot of headaches and lost contacts. Recently, a Mautic user asked about an issue where their emails get marked as bounced and the Email Channel is disabled immediately after just one soft bounce. This contradicts the common understanding that Mautic retries soft bounces several times before disabling the contact’s email channel.
Here’s what you need to know: Mautic does track soft vs. hard bounces internally, but the way it handles them can depend on your setup and the version you’re running (the user was on Mautic 7.2.1 with PHP 8.4). By default, Mautic should retry sending emails on soft bounces multiple times before marking the contact as disabled. However, if your sending service (like SendGrid) is having issues—like IP blacklisting—things can get complicated. Mautic relies on the bounce feedback it gets, and if the bounce is ultimately treated as a hard bounce by SendGrid or if your Mautic instance marks the email channel as disabled right away, those retries won’t happen.
One limitation currently is that the contact list view doesn’t differentiate between soft and hard bounces visually—both show a red bounce icon, even though on the individual contact view you might see yellow for soft bounces. Creating segments based on soft vs. hard bounce status isn’t straightforward either since the filter options don’t distinguish bounce types out of the box. This is a sensible feature request to bring up in the community because it would allow marketers to clean their lists more thoughtfully and potentially re-engage soft bounce contacts.
As for avoiding bounces related to SendGrid IP blacklisting, the options are limited without changing your sending IP or the way Mautic handles retries. Some seek ways to “pass through” their own sending IPs instead of relying on SendGrid’s shared pool, but that requires advanced setup and is not supported natively by Mautic. Retrying bounces automatically when SendGrid unblocks an IP also isn’t a built-in feature, so manual intervention or custom workflows are needed.
In practice, what does this mean for you? If you rely on a third-party SMTP like SendGrid, keep an eye on their IP reputation and your Mautic bounce settings. Don’t expect Mautic to always gracefully handle soft bounces perfectly without some customization or manual cleanup. Also, pushing for better UI/UX around bounce status in Mautic (segment filters showing soft vs hard bounce, better icon distinctions) would make life easier and reduce email waste.
At Mailertizer, we see this bounce handling gap a lot among self-hosted users. That’s part of why we offer a hosted Mautic platform with optimized bounce management and delivery infrastructure tuned to reduce these issues out of the box.
